A Sneak Peek into Boutique Trends: Is It Worth the Hype?

summarizeEditor's Summary

As a sewing enthusiast, I've had the chance to try out Boutique Trends, an Italian sewing pattern magazine that's gained a loyal following. While it's not a game-changer for me, it's definitely a valuable resource for those who specialize in high-end or bespoke garments. The magazine features a range of styles, from elegant evening gowns to stylish daywear, so you're likely to find something that suits your taste. I love that the magazine includes tips and tricks from experienced designers, which adds an extra layer of value to the patterns. The photography in Boutique Trends is top-notch, with beautiful images that showcase the finished garments in a way that's both inspiring and informative. The magazine is well-organized, with clear instructions and diagrams that make it easy to navigate. I appreciate that the magazine often features collaborations with other designers or brands, which introduces me to new styles and techniques. However, the magazine can be pricey, especially if you're not sure if you'll use the patterns. Some of the patterns may require specialized skills or equipment, which can be a barrier for beginners. The magazine is only available in Italian, which can be a challenge for those who don't speak the language. While the patterns are detailed, they can be overwhelming for those who are new to sewing or pattern-making. I wish the magazine included more beginner-friendly projects or tutorials to help new sewers get started. The magazine's focus on high-end or bespoke garments may not appeal to those who prefer more casual or everyday sewing projects.

I'm wrapping up my series of sewing pattern magazine reviews with the Italian magazine Boutique Trends, which has been translated into Russian by the publisher Burda, a name I've grown familiar with.

So, Boutique Trends.
Over the past year, I've only bought three issues of this magazine, which mostly serves as a source of inspiration, similar to Patrones. However, there are some seamstresses who religiously follow every issue and only sew from Boutique Trends because the patterns are tailored to their needs or those of their clients.

Let's start with some minor downsides.
1. The pages feature some pretty out-there outfits that, personally, I struggle to imagine in real life or on a woman who's not a model:
2. The most enigmatic technical drawings (they take up two pages of a sheet) are in Boutique, and it's tough to guess what the finished garment looks like from the photo model in the magazine. As usual, I'll compare them to the technical drawings from Burda:
Left - technical drawings from Boutique, right - from Burda 3. There are no sewing tutorials for making a specific garment. For beginners, these would be super helpful. Burda and Knipmode always include sewing tutorials in each issue:
4. The magazine won't impress fans of sewing for kids and men. I only found children's models in one of the three issues I have, and not a single men's model:
Kids' sizes 36, 37, 38, 39, and 40 caught my eye
What I loved about this pattern book:
1. The size range from 38 to 52 was a big plus (just add 4 to convert to Russian sizes, so 44 becomes 58), but not every style was available in every size. I compared my measurements to the chart and only then chose the right pattern:
2. I loved how many outfits were included for regular women. You don't have to follow every combination, but it's great to get ideas from the accessories and mixing-and-matching different pieces:
3. No pattern book would be complete without useful articles, especially for beginners or those who are new to this type of magazine:
4. Boutique offers more than just sewing clothes – they also make accessories:
5. The pattern pieces have different colored outlines – it's super helpful, you won't get confused:6. You can find Boutique patterns in craft stores, big supermarkets, and newspaper kiosks. I usually buy sewing magazines, including Boutique, on Wildberries. The latest issue (10/2021) costs 215 rubles.
I highly recommend this magazine!
Of course, there are patterns here that you can find in other sewing magazines too, but if you're looking for something unique, this Italian designers' collection can be a great source of inspiration for you.
