Bork C 803 Coffee Maker

I've had my Bork C 803 Coffee Maker for a few months now, and it's been a total lifesaver for my morning routine. It's super easy to use - just add your favorite coffee grounds, pour in some water, and you're good to go. The build quality is seriously solid, and it's been a great value for money. I've used it every day, and it's still going strong.

A Coffee Maker That's Ahead of the Curve - But at What Cost?

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been searching for a coffee maker that's made in the right place, and the BORK C803 caught my eye. This 'conditionally domestic' coffee maker from Russia has a lot going for it, but does it live up to the hype? I've been putting it through its paces for a while now, and here's the lowdown. The BORK C803 is a premium product that's designed to impress, but it's not without its flaws. In this review, I'll break down the good, the bad, and everything in between. From the retro 'lamp' design to the analog pressure gauge, this coffee maker has some seriously cool features. But is it worth the investment? Let's dive in and find out.

A Coffee Maker That's Ahead of the Curve - But at What Cost?
I've been paying more attention to where products are made lately, especially with all the uncertainty surrounding imports due to sanctions. It's only natural to wonder, where do I go if something breaks?
That's why I'm reviewing the BORK C803 coffee maker, a product that's 'conditionally domestic' (even though it's made in China).
BORK is a relatively young Russian company that's making a name for itself. This coffee maker is the kind of product that makes you proud to be supporting a domestic manufacturer. Of course, you have to pay a premium for it. The company positions its products as premium, and they're mainly targeted at the high-end market.
Is it worth the extra cost? Let's take a closer look at the BORK C803 coffee maker.
The coffee maker itself has a retro 'lamp' style design, with a metal body and an analog pressure gauge. It's all very nostalgic and cozy - a bygone era, unfortunately. The only hint that this is a modern appliance is the touch-sensitive buttons with blue backlighting.
This coffee maker has two nozzles. The metal 'milk frother' is included in the package - it's called the 'pitcher' for some reason.
Let's go over some key terms to keep in mind.
The container where you pour the ground coffee is called the 'holder'. The device that presses the coffee before brewing is called the 'temper'. Our coffee maker has a special spot for it, where the temper is held in place by a magnet. To get a good espresso, you need to press the coffee properly with the temper.
By the way, did you know the word 'espresso' comes from Italian? It means both the coffee and the fast train (express, get it?). Our word for coffee is actually related to the word 'press', so it's only 'espresso' if you want to get your coffee as fast as possible.
The BORK C803 holder is a pretty hefty, but nice-to-hold, item with a massive, cool, black handle. The cup is made of stainless steel and comes with the standard two spouts. But this coffee maker has a clever and very functional solution. You can choose the flavor and intensity of your coffee to your liking. The cup holder is equipped with four different types of filters! One is inserted into the spout, and the three additional ones are stored in an ergonomic slide-out compartment at the base of the coffee maker.
Using different filters, you can get a really different coffee, with the same grain.
I've found that the taste and aroma of the coffee are also influenced by the grind size. As you know, a good strong espresso is always a fine (but not too fine!) grind.
Personally, I prefer coffee with a balanced flavor, but the degree of roast has a big impact on it. The more intense the roast, the less sourness, but the more bitterness (tannins) in the flavor. To put it simply, I'm satisfied with the simplest filter - coarse and with one bottom. The coffee comes out not too strong, there's no too thick foam, but there's a pleasant bitterness for me. This is how it looks in the cup. And this coffee is more like an Americano.
Ah, here's the result of the experiment with double bottoms! I mean, the filter, of course. The coffee turns out more intense, and here we see a pretty impressive foam.
I'm really impressed with the filters. We've got two of them, one with a bigger capacity and the other with a smaller one. They're both marked with a special label - "dual wall" - which basically means they've got a double wall, just like a thermos.
Now, let's talk about the rest of the container. It's got a 1.8-liter capacity, and inside you'll find a cellulose filter that's easy to replace.
When the water level gets too high, a bright yellow warning sign pops up with a fun message that's straight out of a fantasy novel. It's a nice touch, if I do say so myself.
I've got to say, the machine itself is pretty reliable. I've got it sitting next to my Krups coffee maker, which has a built-in grinder. It's nice not to have to deal with a separate grinder, but I have to admit that it's already started to malfunction in some of its functions, even though they're not critical.
I know it's not fair to compare electronics to mechanical devices, but when it comes to the taste of the coffee, I've got to give it to Bork. Their coffee is definitely more interesting, in my humble opinion.
That's all from me. Thanks for reading, and I wish you all the best!
Pros:
Thoughtful design with a retro twistClever and functional filter systemReliable machine with a nice touchImpressive coffee quality
Cons:
Premium price pointSome users may find the design too nostalgic
