Hey everyone! As a car owner, you've probably got a bunch of tools and gadgets stashed away in your trunk. For me, one of those essentials is a tire compressor. I mean, it's not just a nice-to-have – it's a must-have!
Some people only use theirs a couple of times a year, when they switch between summer and winter tires. But we're a bit more adventurous, and we change our tires ourselves. Plus, during the summer, we need to inflate our tires pretty regularly after a road trip. So, our compressor gets a lot of use – more in the summer, less in the winter.
We used to have a super basic compressor from Star line, which lasted us about 5 years. But lately, it's been giving us some wonky readings, so we started looking for a new one. We checked out some budget options and some high-end ones, and after getting some recommendations from friends and doing some research, we settled on the Berkut R14 car compressor.
We bought it from the "All Tools" store in the beginning of winter for 3524 rubles – it was actually a bit cheaper than some other places we looked at.
Berkut R14 Car Compressor My husband was sold on the compressor's specs, and I was sold on how it looks – it's really sleek! And when I picked it up, I was surprised by how light it is. That's when I knew we'd made the right choice.
The compressor came in a small cardboard box with a picture of the device on it.
Berkut R14 Car Compressor The top of the box has a plastic handle for easy transportation of the device. Box handle On the reverse side of the box, there was a sticker with a brief description of the compressor's characteristics.
Compressor packaging In the store, we had the opportunity to check the device for a complete set and compliance, as well as whether it's in working condition.
If you want, you can transport the compressor in the box, but the package included a khaki-colored bag made of waterproof material, which is much more convenient to store the device and takes up less space.
Berkut R14 Car Compressor The bag is easy to clean, although it doesn't get dirty much, and it has a small pocket inside where the manual, user guide, and warranty card are stored.
The bag also has a handle, so you won't have any issues transporting the compressor.
Storage and transport bagThe compressor has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of purchase.
You can get a quick rundown of the device's features from the manual, and get more detailed information from the user guide.
Warranty card, user manualThe Berkut R14 high-pressure compressor is designed not only for inflating car tires, but also for inflating bike tires, balls, inflatable boats, and mattresses.
Berkut R14 compressorI was really impressed with the compressor's design – it doesn't look bulky, and even the most delicate person can easily lift it with one hand. The gray-green plastic casing looks nice and is easy to hold onto. It's not prone to stains, and it's a great way to protect the compressor.
Berkut R14 Car Compressor One thing that caught my eye is the metal build of the working cylinder and the electric motor's housing.
On the back of the housing, you'll find the compressor's name, its input voltage – 12V, maximum pressure 8 atm, and air flow rate of 40 liters per minute.
Some people assume that this compressor is only suitable for tires with a 14-inch radius, but that's not entirely accurate.
When you look at the air flow rate of 40 liters per minute, it's clear that this compressor can handle tires of various diameters, including 16 and 17 inches. The only thing to keep in mind is that the smaller the tire, the faster the compressor will inflate it.
Berkut R14 Car Compressor The pressure gauge on this compressor is a standard analog type, with a dial on the housing. The red scale is marked in bars, with 1 bar equivalent to 1 atm, and the black scale is marked in pounds. We're using the red scale for reference.
When inflating tires, the most important thing is not to exceed the recommended pressure level. In our Kia Rio, we usually inflate the tires to 2.2 atm.
Pressure GaugeI was happy to see that the power cord is 3 meters long, and it comes wrapped up with a sticky clip to keep it tidy.
The compressor is turned on via a plug that fits snugly into the car's cigarette lighter socket. It's a solid fit, and it comes out easily when you need to remove it.
Plug and Power CordThe power cord has a built-in 15A fuse that protects the device from voltage spikes in the car's electrical system.
If you're concerned about the fuse breaking, you can remove it and take a look at it. If you want to be extra safe, you can buy a few spare fuses for around 10 rubles each. They might not be necessary, but it's good to have them on hand.
FuseThe air hose is wrapped in a durable black synthetic sleeve that's flexible and won't kink or deform during use. It's 1.2 meters long, which should be plenty for most applications.
Air hose cover The metal nozzle or fitting with internal threads is attached to the hose well, you need to spend some time tightening it. When you unscrew it, a bit of air escapes, but it's still more durable than a lever-style clamp, as the threads don't wear out and always stay tight.
Fitting with a threaded connection If you flip the compressor over, you can see how the air hose is attached to the cylinder. Everything is securely fastened here, and nothing wobbles or falls off.
Berkut R14 compressor At the back of the compressor, there's a power button, a power cord, and a built-in flashlight – a bright LED that lets you inflate tires in the dark or in a poorly lit area. We got to appreciate the presence of the backlight on the very first day of owning this compressor. Berkut R14 Air CompressorOne thing I really love about this compressor is the special anti-vibration feet it comes with. They're these black, slightly rounded, rubberized legs that do a great job of dampening the vibrations when the compressor is in use. Yeah, they can get dirty and worn out over time, but they're super effective at reducing those annoying shakes.
Anti-Vibration FeetAs I mentioned earlier, this compressor isn't just for cars – you can use it to inflate all sorts of things, from bike tires to pool toys, even mattresses. And to make it even easier, there are these three adapter nozzles that screw right onto the compressor's legs.
These adapters are really handy, and they make it a breeze to inflate whatever you need to.
Additional adapters Honestly, I didn't even notice these adapters at first – I thought they were just a decorative element. It wasn't until my husband removed them and showed me how they looked that I realized what they were for. This handy, multi-functional device is capable of more than just inflating car tires. Adapters attached to the compressorOur old compressor was a nightmare – it would lie about the pressure readings, so we knew it was time to upgrade. We bought the new compressor just as winter was hitting its peak, and we were on the lookout for a flat, dry spot to inflate our tires. The nearest spot turned out to be a covered parking lot at a shopping center. We found a relatively dry spot and got to work inflating our tires.
Since the area was a bit dimly lit, the lack of parking lot lighting was a problem. Luckily, the built-in light on the compressor came in handy.
Compressor lighting I took all these photos with a flash, but for this one, I deliberately turned it off. If you need to, you can adjust the light to shine in the direction you need it to, making it easier to see what you're doing. Air compressor lightingI was happy to see that the power cord was long enough to reach the cigarette lighter of my car, and the compressor itself sat steady on the ground without any wobbling.
Berkut R14 air compressorThe compressor's stability during operation was impressive – it did vibrate a bit, but the rubber feet did a great job of dampening the movement.
Inflating the tiresThe valve stem nut screwed on easily and seated properly.
Berkut R14 air compressorI was really surprised by how quiet the compressor was while in use – it didn't make a lot of noise, and I could still have a conversation with someone nearby without having to yell.
The decibel level of the compressor was around 73 dB, which is roughly equivalent to a loud conversation, but not much louder.
We didn't inflate the tire, just topped it off, so the process only took a minute or two per wheel.
We used the red gauge to monitor the pressure and aimed for 2.2 atm, but since some air would escape when we removed the valve stem, we ended up going a bit higher.
Berkut R14 Car Compressor We're really happy with how the Berkut R14 Car Compressor has performed so far. We first used it at the start of February, and since then we've checked the tire pressure at least three times.
Last time we swapped our winter tires for summer ones, and although the service center did top up the pressure after the change, we still needed to double-check.
I know it's a bit early to be writing a review, but our friend has had a previous model of the Berkut for over 12 years without any issues, so I'm hoping ours will last just as long.
The key is to use it correctly and not let it freeze – the manufacturer's specs say it can handle temperatures between -30 and +80 degrees Celsius, so overheating isn't a concern. However, you do need to bring it inside if it's going to be exposed to severe cold, which wasn't a problem for us this winter since the lowest temperature we saw was around 40 degrees below zero.
You can't use the compressor in the rain, and you shouldn't leave it running for more than 20 minutes without turning it off, or touch the metal parts after it's been running for a while.
It goes without saying that you shouldn't drop the compressor or try to take it apart – if something does go wrong, check the manual to see if the problem is described and whether it requires any major repairs.
It's a reliable and well-made device that gives accurate readings, runs quietly, and inflates tires quickly.
I also appreciate the built-in lighting, and the length of the power cord makes it easy to use with vehicles of any size.
I've been able to inflate tires of all diameters with this compressor, including bike tires, inflatable boats, mattresses, and even kids' toys.
I'm really digging the design of this compressor, and it's also super lightweight and easy to clean.
My husband was impressed by how well it performs, considering its small size.
So far, we're both happy with this compressor, but if we encounter any issues or problems during use, I'll be sure to update this review.
Thanks for reading my review!
