Bengal Fig Tree

This Bengal Fig Tree is a popular choice for indoor gardening. Its compact size and low-maintenance requirements make it perfect for small spaces and busy homeowners. The tree's ability to thrive in a variety of lighting conditions is a major plus - it's a great option for anyone looking to bring some greenery into their home without a lot of fuss. Plus, it's surprisingly easy to care for, so even if you don't have a green thumb, you can still enjoy the benefits of having a living tree indoors. I've had mine for a few months now, and it's been a game-changer for purifying the air and adding some natural beauty to my space.

My Bengali Ficus from Replant Has Become the Star of My Home

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been growing Bengali ficus plants for years, and this one from Replant has exceeded my expectations in every way. The plant has a natural ability to thrive in indoor conditions, producing beautiful, dense leaves and an impressive display that's perfect for any room. I was blown away by its growth rate - it's like a green machine! I've had some experience with indoor plants, but this one has been a total game changer. The only thing I'd recommend is keeping an eye on the humidity levels and direct sunlight, as it can get a bit too intense if you're not careful. I've always had a green thumb, thanks to my mom - she's the one who passed on her love for indoor plants and gardening to me. Growing up, our home was always filled with plants, and my mom's garden was a real showstopper. I've been cultivating fiddle leaf figs (Ficus benghalensis) of different varieties, including the bengal fig, which I'm excited to share my experience with today.
Ficus benghalensis reviewFicus benghalensis is a perennial evergreen tree that belongs to the fig family.
I'm not even sure how I ended up with this plant, but it's been growing like crazy over the past few years. I decided to prune it, leaving a small stump and treating the cut end with antiseptic ointment. I kept the stump under a bag for a few days, watering and fertilizing it. To my surprise, a new shoot started growing from the stump, and it's been thriving ever since.
The plant has produced multiple shoots, and it's now looking like a miniature tree.

The leaves on this plant are dense, glossy, and have a waxy texture, almost like they've been varnished.
Ficus benghalensis review
They're a deep, rich green color with light green veins, and they're quite large - the biggest one on my plant is almost as big as my palm.

The young leaves are adorable, with dense, pale green buds.

For all my houseplants (I've got multiple fiddle leaf figs, aloe, a citrus tree, and a calamondin, plus a few cacti), I treat them all the same:
I water them twice a week, keeping it moderate and avoiding overwateringI mist them several times a week, usually every other dayI wipe down the leaves with a damp cloth as neededI constantly humidify the air in my apartment. Currently, the humidity level in my rooms is around 45%. I highly recommend the Xiaomi humidifier - it's been working almost non-stop for over 1.5 years now, and it's currently priced under 2,000 rubles - a great value for the price.I use Fasco Flowering Happiness for Houseplants for root fertilization. There are plenty of photos of my plants and a detailed review of the product in the comments. To summarize, I fertilize all my plants once a week during the fall and winter months.I don't fuss too much over the soil type - I just pick up a basic Fasco Universal Soil from the nearest home goods storeIllumination - in the past, we lived on the 21st floor, and our apartment was bright and sunny, but the sun wasn't too harsh. My plants were thriving. However, in the summer of 2021, we moved to a new apartment on the third floor, which is also bright and sunny, but during the spring and summer, the sun beats directly into the windows. When we moved, I immediately noticed that some of my plants were getting scorched, and the leaves on my fiddle leaf figs were slightly wilted. Based on my notes, the fiddle leaf fig doesn't like direct, intense sunlight - it's better to provide some shade. This summer, I've been using curtains to block out some of the sunlight during the day, and I've been moving the plants away from the windows during the hottest part of the day.
Pruning - my fiddle leaf fig grows incredibly fast, and if I don't prune it regularly, it can easily grow up to the ceiling. You can either pinch off the young leaves to encourage new side branches and a more compact shape, or you can prune the branches to maintain a desired size. If you do prune the branches, make sure to remove any excess milky sap and treat the cut ends with a specialized solution (such as fungicide or a disinfectant like chlorhexidine or miramistin).
By the way, I'm currently experimenting with propagating a fiddle leaf fig branch in my Xiaomi aquaponic system (I recently successfully propagated an avocado pit in it).
Bengal Fig Reviews
This winter, my fiddle leaf fig sat next to a heater, and let me tell you, it was blasting. I noticed that the leaves started to curl up from the heat.

I moved it away from the heater and closer to the humidifier.
Fiddle Leaf Fig Reviews
The fiddle leaf fig looks super stylish and adds a touch to my home, and it's relatively easy to care for. But, of course, it still needs some attention, just like any plant.
I highly recommend growing one at home.
