A Disappointing Experience with Beethoven Pet Stores: What You Should Know

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been buying pet supplies from Beethoven stores in Moscow for a while now, but my recent experience with their animal care has left me feeling pretty disappointed. After adopting a Syrian hamster from one of their locations, I noticed some concerning issues with their facilities and staff. I decided to share my observations with fellow pet owners, hoping to raise awareness about the potential problems at Beethoven pet stores. From inadequate enclosures to poor employee training, I've outlined the key concerns I've encountered. If you're a pet owner considering Beethoven stores, read on to learn more about my experience and what you can expect.

I've been buying products from the Beethoven pet store chain in Moscow this year – Beleyevo, Frunzenskaya, and Yugo-Zapad. And, funnily enough, my sister and I adopted a Syrian hamster from one of them. But more on that later.
I also compared the living conditions and wrote about the shortcomings I found in the Beethoven pet store group on VK about animal care.
I never got a response from the representatives, and after about a year, nothing changed in the pet stores.
What's missing in Beethoven pet stores for animals:
1. Enclosures
2. Wheels/disks for animals
3. Clean water
4. Minimal employee training on animal care and feeding
5. Not everywhere are the cages/cages clean
6. Inadequate food
Comment on each point:
Some cages don't have enclosures, which means animals sleep during the day under the light of the lamp and can't hide from it. It's a nightmare for them, no matter how long they live in such conditions. Plus, there are no wheels for animals to run around, which is crucial for them. Just think about it: hamsters are meant to be active, not stuck in one place all day.
hamsters are forced to hide from each other under the light, as there's no enclosure
a log is nice, but it's no substitute for an enclosure – hamsters are huddled in the left corner
• The water in the bowls is dirty. Animals can often contaminate the bowl and need the water changed daily, or even several times a day. I visited several times during the day, and it hadn't been changed. This is basic animal care. The staff in the stores are completely unresponsive, with no sense of urgency or concern for the animals. On polite requests, they'd just nod, yawn, and stay put. I've seen this kind of attitude before, and it's just unacceptable.
When my sister and I bought our hamster, I witnessed the staff handling it roughly – it let out a cry, and they grabbed it and other animals abruptly. We tried to object, but were completely ignored. This is not how you treat living creatures!
It's not how people who work with these animals should behave, and it's their responsibility to care for them during their time in the pet store. I mean, come on, it's not rocket science! Our hamster is still pretty skittish, which is probably the least of the problems and issues that could've been.
No cleaning in the boxes – the animals live really close together and there's a lot of mess that seems to be rarely cleaned up. In Beethoven's, the grimiest boxes are near the floor. It's like they're trying to create a petri dish for bacteria and germs!
the bedding is bad and doesn't cover the whole bottom, there's sweet stuff in the dish that's not allowed, and hamsters have a hard time getting into the wheel
the hay doesn't cover the whole bottom
• Unsuitable food for dwarf hamsters – there are sweet corn kernels and other sweet veggies and fruits that show up. I mean, come on, don't they know that hamsters are prone to diabetes and obesity?
there was no hiding house in the next box over
• The box filler is often not suitable. You can see that the floor isn't covered with granules or hay (although in the case of rabbits and guinea pigs, hay is needed, but not for hamsters). Comment: looking at the photo above, it's clear that the box on the right is cleaner than the one on the left. This is just basic animal husbandry. I think if zoos are going to treat animals as products, they should be kept in normal, suitable conditions. Zoos should provide a good quality of life for these animals within their walls (Article 469 of the RF Code: Quality of goods).
In my opinion, it would be better to have specialized animal shelters, not stores where untrained staff would take care of the animals, not knowing how to care for them, feed them, or breed them properly.
The attitude of the staff and administration at Beethoven's in the VK group is concerning – there are no responses or feedback.
Moreover, I'm worried about the attitude of zoos where the clinics from Beethoven are located right next to the animal enclosures. It's unclear whether the vets and specialists are just walking by with their eyes closed.
I've got to recommend that you take your pets to trusted specialists when they're not feeling well. For example, I've found a great group on VK called ХОМЯКИ, where people have shared tons of useful information about vet clinics not just in Moscow, but all over the country.
When it comes to buying pets, I think it's way better to go through reputable breeders rather than zoon markets. By reducing demand, we can also reduce the number of animals being kept in subpar conditions.
My heart goes out to all the animals stuck in these situations, even if it's just temporarily. I wish they could find loving homes and get the care they need ASAP.
I hope this review can bring some attention to zoon markets like Beethoven's to improve their animal care conditions. And to all the pet owners out there, I want to emphasize the importance of doing your research and reading verified information.
Let's all do our part to prioritize animal welfare and take the time to learn about their needs.

  • •The enclosures for small animals are often inadequate, with insufficient hiding places and no wheels for exercise, which can be a real concern for pet owners. The food options for pets are limited, and the quality can be questionable, which is a major red flag for me. Employee training on animal care and feeding is lacking, leading to inconsistent care, which can be stressful for pets. The cages and enclosures are not always clean, creating a risk for disease transmission, which is a huge concern. The staff's lack of attention to detail can result in missed feeding times or inadequate care, which can be devastating for pets. The stores can be noisy, with loud music and chatter creating stress for pets, which is not ideal.
