A Gem in Smolensk: Affordable Hotel with Homey Touches

summarizeEditor's Summary

I spent a week at the Aurora Hotel in Smolensk and was pleasantly surprised by its homey touches and affordable prices. The hotel's location is super convenient - it's within a 20-30 minute walk to the city center. The building's unique architectural design caught my eye, and the sauna and restaurant on the premises are definite perks. I wish I had more time to try them out, but my stay was still comfortable and relaxing. I'd recommend the Aurora Hotel to anyone looking for a budget-friendly option in Smolensk.

Where to find it
The Aurora Hotel is located at 7A Bagration Street in Smolensk. I took a taxi from the train station, which cost around 200-270 rubles. The hotel's within a 20-30 minute walk to the city center.
About the hotel
The building's a five-story structure with an architectural design that's a bit unusual. There's a sauna and a restaurant on the premises, but we didn't get a chance to try them out.
There's a lift, and each floor has a waiting area with a chair, which is a nice touch.
I loved the green oases on each floor - it felt like I was at home, and the plants were well-maintained.
The only downside was the dirty parking lot - I almost slipped when getting into the taxi.
Breakfast was included in the room rate, and we headed to the restaurant on the first floor at 8 am. We snagged the last available table in the middle of the room, which could seat 10 people or more. It felt like we were part of a big family, just like in the old days.
There weren't many options for breakfast, but I managed to grab some leftover salad with peppers and a few pieces of cucumber.
They had omelets, porridge, pancakes, cheese and cold cuts, and we weren't left hungry.
The staff were super friendly and helpful, and there's a cozy relaxation area near the reception where we waited for our taxi.
About my room
I booked a twin room with separate beds for 3,500 rubles, which was a great value for the New Year's period. The room rate included breakfast, and the windows looked out onto the courtyard, which was quiet at night.
The room had everything we needed: towels, a hair dryer, a full bathroom instead of a shower, two bottles of water, tea and coffee packets, slippers, toiletries, toothbrushes, and an iron.
One thing that didn't quite fit was the gray color of the towels - it was a bit too bland for my taste. The interior was also a bit outdated, with a style that reminded me of the 80s or 90s.
However, the temperature in the room was comfortable, and the mattresses and pillows were great.
What really impressed me was the electric kettle - it was the first time I'd seen one in a hotel.
I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a cozy stay in Smolensk.
