I'm a plant enthusiast with a passion for sharing my experiences. I've got a bunch of flowers in my care – some live in my backyard during the summer, while others winter in my greenhouse. I grow a wide variety of plants, including palms, succulents, cacti, flowering plants, ficus, and many more. Today, I want to share my experience with the aptenia plant. I've known it since childhood, as it grew on my grandma's windowsill. I didn't know its name back then, but now I do. Mine's a variagated one, not just green, but also white-green.
Aptenia is a popular plant in many hot countries. You often see it on planters, streets, and near hotels or cafes.
Here, it's more common as a houseplant. I rarely see it in outdoor planters, but it's definitely out there. Mine's in a hanging planter and grows all summer. It winters in my greenhouse.
Aptenia has small, fleshy, and delicate leaves. It grows ampelously, meaning its branches hang down if it gets too big.
It blooms with lots of small, vibrant flowers, which is really pretty and delicate.
Care
Aptenia is surprisingly low-maintenance. It loves bright sunlight and good watering. It can handle direct, scorching sunlight, but make sure to water it thoroughly, either early in the morning or late in the evening. It's not picky about soil or fertilizers.
However, if you put it in a large pot with rich soil and gentle, indirect sunlight, it'll grow faster, and its leaves and flowers will be bigger. But it still needs good lighting – south-facing windows or a sunny patio are perfect.
Propagation
Propagating aptenia is a breeze. Simply cut a stem, and it'll root in water within 7-10 days. You can then transfer it directly to soil, and it'll take off. I've never had a single cutting fail to root – it's a very hardy plant.
Aptenia is perfect for beginner gardeners, as it's almost impossible to kill. Just don't put it in a dark spot.
If you want a lush, full plant quickly, plant multiple cuttings in one pot.
I don't often fertilize my aptenia, and I just water it occasionally. It's not picky about humidity levels.
Aptenia is very affordable and can be found at local nurseries or online marketplaces like Avito. A small plant in a pot costs around 100-150 rubles. I'm not even sure where I got mine from.
I highly recommend aptenia. It's a unique combination of beauty and low maintenance.
I consider aptenia a magical plant due to its beauty and low maintenance requirements.
