Anna Sui Secret Wish: A Perfume That's Lost Its Magic

summarizeEditor's Summary

I still remember the first time I caught a whiff of Anna Sui Secret Wish. It was back when I was 18 and shopping at a small perfume store in Brooklyn. Prices were steep, online shopping didn't exist yet, and to see how much money a student had, you needed a microscope. Fast forward, a lot of years, and somehow a batch of Anna Sui Secret Wish miniatures ended up in Ukraine. In the spring of 2021, these 5ml bottles were selling for around 120-150 hryvnia at Makeup, Prom, Perfume, and pretty much every other store. But my initial experience with this perfume was way more magical than the one I had later.

I still remember the first time I caught a whiff of Anna Sui Secret Wish. It was back when I was 18 and shopping at a small perfume store in Brooklyn. Prices were steep, online shopping didn't exist yet, and to see how much money a student had, you needed a microscope. Let's just say I was living on a shoestring budget.
The green bottle's contents completely captivated me at the time. I couldn't break down the scent into individual notes - I just knew it had something fresh, something bitter, something spicy, and something uniquely elusive.
Fast forward, um, a lot of years, and somehow a batch of Anna Sui Secret Wish miniatures ended up in Ukraine. In the spring of 2021, these 5ml bottles were selling for around 120-150 hryvnia at Makeup, Prom, Perfume, and pretty much everywhere else.
We quickly went through them. While I was deciding whether or not I needed it, only a few stores on Prom had them left in stock. But I eventually managed to get my hands on a miniature, although it cost me 170 hryvnia.
The miniature comes packaged not just in a box, but also with a plastic insert.
The packaging is really inconvenient to open. The triangular-shaped bottle has cut-off edges, making it difficult to fit into the plastic insert.
Why did they design it this way?
The cap and bubble repeat the design of the full-size bottle.
The cap on this perfume is a real pain to put on and take off. It's super tight, and I've had to wrestle with it a bit. On the plus side, the fragrance is safely locked in, and it won't escape the bottle on its own. When I first saw the packaging, I thought, 'This doesn't look like a cheap perfume.' But, as they say, don't judge a book by its cover.
The contents, however, left me scratching my head. The notes are supposed to be:
Top note: Apricot, Melon, Lemon
.
Heart note: Pineapple, Blackcurrant
.
Base note: Amber, White Cedar
I've always been a fan of cedar and amber, and I thought this perfume would be a nice throwback to my youth. But, unfortunately, it's not quite the same. The modern version is all over the place.
There's no cedar, no amber, and no pineapple or blackcurrant. I can barely pick up on the lemon and a hint of apricot.
The lemon note is the only one that sticks around for a while - about 2-3 hours. I've applied it to my skin, hair, and even fabric, and the result is always the same. I was too afraid to add a fixative, fearing it would ruin the scent.
I used this perfume during the hot summer of 2021 and managed to finish the tiny bottle in just two months.
I was so disappointed with the short lifespan that I had to reapply it 2-3 times a day. The initial excitement I felt when I first tried it has long since worn off, and I'm left with a lingering sense of disappointment. This perfume just didn't live up to my expectations, even back when I was 18.When the tiny Anna Sui Secret Wish bottle finally ran out, I started wondering what had gone wrong.
Here are my top three theories:
Perhaps the formula changed over time.Maybe they were trying to capture a new market with diluted miniatures. It's possible that my perfume preferences have simply evolved.I'm glad it's disappeared from the market so quickly, but what's the point of the fancy bottle? Counterfeiters usually don't go to such lengths.
It's possible they were trying to revive an old scent with new samples to get people interested in the brand again. I'm not sure, but it's clear that my perfume preferences have changed over time. So, the verdict is in. I'm not impressed with the full-size version, but the miniature is definitely not worth it. The scent is flat and fleeting, and you need to reapply it constantly.
I wouldn't recommend it.
Check out some of the newer scents that actually impressed me
I saw a juniper bush in my dream, I heard a metallic crunch in the distance, I heard the sweet sound of amethyst berries, and in the silence, I liked it.
A cologne called Sasha in a bottle from a well-known brand and an unnatural attraction to myself
A warm sloe leaf and the pulp of a ripe, juicy melon
