Editor's Summary

I recently spent a week devouring the 400-page book 'All About Drakosh' with my daughter, and let me tell you, it was a total letdown. I thought this book would be a hit with my kid, what with its catchy title and vibrant illustrations. But the storyline, which revolves around an ordinary family's vacation, failed to captivate my daughter's attention. The large font size is a definite plus, making it easy to read, but that's about where the good stuff ends. If you're looking for a fun and colorful book to share with your little one, I'd recommend exploring other options.

I recently finished reading All About Drakosh with my daughter, and I'm excited to share my thoughts on this book.

I bought this book for my daughter after reading plenty of positive reviews, as our local library has a huge collection, and I wanted to get something worthwhile.

Price - 330 грн. (I bought it at a regular bookstore)Publisher: "Perо", Kiev. 2019

Number of pages - 400

Font - large and easy to read.

Plot:

This is a trilogy about an ordinary family with two kids who are on vacation at their countryside house.

In their barn, the kids discover a huge egg that hatches into a small dragon - the main character of the book.

The book is structured into three parts, each consisting of chapters that cover the kids' adventures with their new pet, from feeding and caring for it to its eventual "debut": all of this is neatly divided into three parts, each with its own set of chapters:

Part 1.

Part 2.

Part 3.First, let's talk about the book's positives:📌Each story is about 4-5 pages long, which is super convenient for reading to your kid before bed: a lovely way to wrap up the evening.

📌The illustrations are vibrant, emotive, and realistic. There's a picture on almost every page. For my kids, this adds an extra layer of fun to the book.

I was really impressed with the quality of the book. The paper is thick, the font is nice and large, and it's just a pleasure to hold and read.

The stories are simple and straightforward, almost to a fault. I mean, they're not exactly complex or thought-provoking. My kid didn't even ask many questions, which was both a plus and a minus for us.

Downsides:

The simplicity of the stories actually worked against the book. My kid didn't have much to think about or discuss. It's just a straightforward, everyday tale about a dad working all day, a mom managing the household, and the kids playing with their new friend Drakosh.

And then there's the slang. Oh boy, there's a lot of it.

Cool hat!

Come on, think for yourself, you numbskull!

Hey, you big lummox!

Where's the forest full of sheep? - Nowhere, except for you!

You're a total idiot!

Ah, you're a real nasty piece of work!

What a disaster, you're driving a car at your age!

Catastrophes, you dimwit!

Never mind, I'll just put on some great music!

Honestly, I'm not a fan of slang in kids' books. There's already enough of it in our everyday lives.

You can find similar 'kid-friendly' language in books like 'Pippi Longstocking' and 'Denis' Stories', but it's not as prominent here. I wish our kids could learn to express themselves beautifully through books.

I'm still trying to figure out why the book includes scenes where kids are smoking and playing cards. I get that these 'hobbies' are common in modern families, but why would you want to suggest more ways for kids to spend their free time? And why on earth would you want to teach uninitiated young readers about cigarette brands and the fact that the queen beats the jack?

I didn't learn anything from the book.

After reading even the shortest books, my daughter and I love to discuss which characters did the right thing and which didn't. We talk about the qualities that are valued in people.

This book doesn't offer anything like that. It's just a normal story. The book doesn't even touch on family values like respecting your elders, helping your parents, and so on.

When I asked my daughter, 'What did you like about this book?' she said, 'It's funny!'. 'Gy' is her catchphrase that she repeats throughout the book. I guess it was supposed to be funny, but by the end of the book, it was getting annoying.

And to make matters worse, the book ends with a bunch of 'Gy's! It really ruined the whole experience.

My Verdict:My 6-year-old daughter loved this book. We read it together over the course of a month, and she would often ask to read two chapters in one sitting.

Will modern kids like this book? Yeah, they probably will. It's got a simple storyline and some funny moments. Who wouldn't want a pet dragon, right?

But from a parent's perspective, this book is a total waste. It doesn't teach kids anything about being good people or developing good habits.

I'd only recommend this book as a way to mix things up and bring some laughter to your child's life. After all, a good laugh is worth its weight in gold!

Thanks for reading my review!

You can read reviews of other kids' books from our home library by following these links:

If you've got a daughter, get her this book! 'How Tasya Lived'. M.Tolmacheva

'Fairy Tales of Happy Wonders and Their Little Owner'. I.Bogdanova. (It's not a bestseller, but it's way more interesting than many 'celebrity' kids' books!)

'Fairy Tales and Pictures'. V.Suteev

I've gotta say, I was a bit skeptical about these kids' books at first. But after digging in, I found some real gems. I mean, have you seen "Большая книга кроличьих историй" by Женевьева Юрье? It's a wild ride, let me tell you. And for all you dads out there, "У папы важные дела" by Х.Ховартс is a must-read. If you're looking for something a bit more lighthearted, "Приключения Маруси" by Жильбер Делаэ is a great choice. And if you're looking for something with a bit more substance, "Незабудка" is a great option. And finally, "Большая книга для маленьких друзей" by Манфред Май is a great addition to any kid's library.

A Book that Could Mess with Your Head - Not in a Good Way

A psychological thriller that'll keep you guessing, but not in a good way. Unpredictable plot, complex characters, and themes that'll make you question reality.
