A Rehab Nightmare: Our Horrific Experience at Idyllia
When my grandfather was diagnosed with early-onset dementia, we were terrified. We didn't know what to expect or how to care for him. After consulting with several doctors, they recommended we have him stay in a rehabilitation center for his condition to improve.
We were initially turned away by the Alexeev Hospital due to a cystostomy, a condition that we were told wouldn't be a problem. This left us searching for a suitable rehabilitation center that could cater to his needs.
We came across Idyllia online, and their website seemed promising. They claimed to handle dementia patients and offered rehabilitation services. We weren't concerned about the cost at that point; we just wanted good quality care for my grandfather.
We got in touch with Idyllia, and we had a chat with one of their representatives. She was nice and answered all our questions. She sent us photos of the rooms and the facility, told us they had many doctors, and that my grandfather would be under the supervision of the head doctor, a psychologist, and the caregivers. It all sounded good, but we were still a bit concerned about visiting restrictions due to quarantine.
We decided to go with Idyllia, and we arrived with my grandfather. We filled out the questionnaire, handed him over to the nurses/caregivers, met the psychologist, and the head doctor, and asked for their contact numbers. My grandfather can't use a phone, so we needed to have direct contact with the people taking care of him.
The psychologist said she could be reached from 9 am to 6 pm, while the head doctor allocated one hour a day for us. Then, the head doctor asked us to explain how to clean the cystostomy. This really surprised us, since we had been told that the cystostomy wasn't a problem. We handed over all the recommendations for caring for the cystostomy to the head doctor.
We stayed at Idyllia for 10 days, and here's what we experienced:
Our Experience at Idyllia
The Rooms: You could choose a single room (5,000 rubles) or a double room (4,500 rubles). We took a single room, but they never let us in to see it with our own eyes. The Food: They said they would feed him well and often. Unfortunately, we couldn't verify this, since my grandfather couldn't tell us himself.Daily Walks: We still don't know if they took my grandfather for walks. They never sent us any photos, despite our requests. The Caregivers: They should have been taking care of my grandfather, but how much time did they actually spend with him? He was completely alone at night, which led to an unpleasant incident.Staying in Touch with Family: We contacted the psychologist, and she was usually available. However, things didn't go smoothly with the head doctor, who wasn't always aware of everything and would leave to talk to the caregivers.Medications: We signed a paper agreeing to let Idyllia handle my grandfather's medication, but they didn't end up buying any of the necessary medications.Care Instructions: We provided the instructions, which included information on when to give my grandfather his medications and how to clean his catheter. But it wasn't followed properly. A week later, we were told we needed to bring Chlorhexidine to clean the catheter, which was a huge oversight.Entertainment: The staff played games with the elderly to keep them entertained, but we have no comment on the quality of these activities.Psychologist Sessions: These were supposed to happen, but nothing was sent, and no sessions took place.Additional Services: They tried to sell us everything from massages to pedicures to extra psychologist sessions. They even pushed for a psychiatrist to visit, but promised to coordinate the cost with us beforehand. However, the psychiatrist showed up without our knowledge and we were later billed 7,000 rubles for their services. It all came to a head when my grandfather's catheter came out. The caregiver promised to reinsert it, but we were left in the dark. We had to call the head doctor, who suggested hiring a private doctor to reinsert the catheter. We refused and asked them to call an ambulance instead. My grandfather was rushed to the hospital, and we were left to deal with the aftermath.
The hospital ended up transferring him to a urology department and then a psychoneurological department because the head doctor claimed the cystostomy had fallen out accidentally while he was sleeping. But we know that's not true. This mix-up wasted precious time, and by the time they were able to reinsert the cystostomy, my grandfather had to stay in the hospital for several more days, which took a toll on his overall health.
After this whole ordeal, neither the psychologist nor the head doctor ever bothered to call us to check in on my grandfather's condition or ask how he was doing. It was like they just didn't care.
When we went to pick up my grandfather's belongings, we asked for the psychiatrist's report, but all they gave us were his personal items. No report, no explanation. It was like they were trying to sweep everything under the rug.
Our experience at Idyllia was a complete disaster. We're not going back, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, especially if you're looking for a rehab center that actually cares about its patients.
