A Colourful and Useful Book - Full Review of What It Offers and Its Flaws

summarizeEditor's Summary

I stumbled upon this book back in 2011 while browsing through a Bukvoed store. It was one of those random purchases that turned out to be a great find. I've since acquired a few more books from the same series, and I even got a few other books from Bukvoed that I'll review in the future. The book is a comprehensive school guide for studying saltwater inhabitants, which is a shame it wasn't developed further in school. The illustrations are bright, realistic, and grab your attention, making it easy to read and understand. It's a great resource for learning about the ocean and its inhabitants, covering everything from fish to birds, and even plants and bays. The book is lightweight, making it easy to carry around and flip through, and the text is easy to read, even for kids, with a perfect font size. The book's design is top-notch, with a beautiful layout and great use of colour. It's not just a bunch of dry text, the book is actually fun to read, and the pictures throughout make it a great visual learning tool.

I stumbled upon this book back in 2011 while browsing through a Bukvoed store. It was one of those random purchases that turned out to be a great find. I've since acquired a few more books from the same series, and I even got a few other books from Bukvoed that I'll review in the future. I remember buying "Life in Salty Water" from a souvenir shop near the Oceanarium in St. Petersburg, at Zvenigorodskaya metro station. They had all sorts of marine-themed goodies, including books like this one. I recall it being a dark green "Life in Fresh Water", but I chose "Life in Salty Water" because it looked brighter and more colorful.
This book falls under the category of a 'school guide'. It's a comprehensive textbook for studying saltwater inhabitants, which is a shame it wasn't developed further in school. I'm sure it would have been a hit with kids and teenagers alike. The book is incredibly beautiful, with bright, realistic illustrations that grab your attention right away. What's more impressive is that it's packed with a lot of useful information, not just pictures. I was also drawn to the fact that in the back, they list other books from this publisher: for history buffs, geography enthusiasts, mythology lovers, and anatomy fans.
I love how the content is tailored to each reader's interests. Plus, the mini-chapters are a nice touch. The design team really put some thought into the layout – even the back cover has useful info instead of just being a sales pitch.
WHAT I LIKED
The book is divided into several sections. It's super easy to navigate and choose what to read. Of course, it makes sense to start from the beginning, but if you're not into mollusks, you can skip ahead to the fish section. Each chapter is self-contained, making it easy to jump around. The sections include:
🦭 LIFE IN THE WOMB OF LIFE
This part talks about how our planet is 90% water and how life first emerged in the ocean, not on land. It's got some cool facts about whales, seals, penguins, and walruses.
The 'northernmost' part of the book had me shivering just by reading it. The illustrations are so realistic, it's like you're right there in the icy waters
🐡 UPSIDE-DOWN SKYSCRAPER
This section describes the 5 levels of the ocean world and who lives on each one (plants, crabs, fish, and more)
🌿 SEAFOOD PYRAMID
This chapter breaks down who eats whom in the ocean
🪸 ROOMMATES OF ALL FLOORS
A detailed rundown of all sorts of corals and mollusks
⭐️ CUCUMBERS AND STARS
The title says it all)
Sea Creatures
Shrimps, crabs, and lobsters - where do they live, what's the difference?
Fish - big, small, and weird
This includes all fish that live and breed in saltwater, including sharks and turtles
2. Illustrations
I'm still blown away by how beautifully and realistically these illustrations are done. Each one is on theme, big, and detailed. You can see the fish's fins, gills, and teeth in incredible detail. xa0
It looks so lifelike, you'll think it's the real thing. Not a model, not a toy, but a genuine fish. Kudos to T. Kaniwets for that!
3. Cover Design
The cover design is eye-catching. This book will stand out on any shelf. I also love the pages - they're white, crisp, and glossy.
I hope my phone can capture the smoothness and shine of the matted paper. It's not your average newspaper or cheap A4 paper, but high-quality paper.
4. Font
Many publishers focus on information density. People want to pay for content, not pictures. But the font often looks messy or too small. Not here - it's a pleasure to read this book. Your eyes won't hurt, and you won't need to squint to read the text. Suitable for any type of vision
5. Weight
I'm a total flashback to my school days when I used to lug around this massive backpack with loads of textbooks, notebooks, and folders. I hated those thick textbooks and educational materials - they were so heavy! But this book is a different story. I love how lightweight it is.
It fits perfectly into any backpack and might even squeeze into a lady's handbag. The book is incredibly light, considering it has 93 pages - that's a lot!WHAT DIDN'T I LIKE?
The book is great, but there are some aspects that I think don't quite fit the school bill. It depends on the class, of course. If it's for 9-11 graders, it's fine, but I'm not sure younger kids would find it interesting to learn about things like acapometers, radiolarians, or actiniae.
xa0
The Latin names are way too complicated. The book is definitely more suited for adults who are willing to put in the effort. That's why I wouldn't call it a 'schoolbook' - it's too dense. Even an adult might struggle to remember all the names and understand what they're referring to. It's definitely a book for a more mature audience.
