A Book That's a Total Waste of Time and Money

summarizeEditor's Summary

I picked up this book during our year-end cleaning session, and I've got to say, it's a total letdown. As a teacher, I was expecting a self-help book with positive advice on believing in oneself, but it turns out it's actually for kids. The author, Pal Beck, is a Hungarian writer, but this book just didn't deliver. It's like they took every cliche and mashed them together into a mess. If you're looking for a book that's going to inspire you, keep looking. I was expecting a lot more substance, but what I got was a bunch of fluff. The writing style is clear, but it's also super simplistic - not exactly what I'm looking for in a self-help book. Overall, I'd say this book is a waste of time and money. If you've got kids, they might enjoy it, but for adults, it's a total miss.

A Book That's a Total Waste of Time and Money
I stumbled upon this book during our year-end cleaning session, and I'm still trying to figure out why it ended up in our donation pile. The blurb doesn't give me a clear idea of what it's about or who it's intended for. I thought I'd give it a read during my New Year's break and then sell it on the cheap, but I ended up reading it, and I'm not going to sell it now.
As a teacher, I've studied children's literature in school, and I was expecting a self-help book with positive advice on believing in oneself. That would've been really helpful. But, unfortunately, that's not what I got. It turns out the book is actually for kids, and I'm a teacher, so I've studied children's literature in school.
The author is a Hungarian writer, Pal Beck, and I've heard great things about his fantasy novel, The Bane of Magic, but I haven't read it. The blurb says the book is intended for kids in the lower and middle school age range.
What's the problem? Are you dissatisfied with yourself? Do you lack courage, speed, or strength? Then join the queue! There's a master wizard who can fill in the gaps. That's where Budilnik, Vienik, and Dyrka go to get their flaws fixed and gain confidence. But often, being lacking in one thing is made up for by another: an ordinary person may discover hidden talents and abilities, a cowardly and weak person may do brave things. Has that ever happened to you? Even flaws can become virtues!
I thought this book would be more about self-analysis and positive advice on believing in oneself, and that would be really helpful. But, unfortunately, that's not what I got. The book is actually about a group of kids who go to see a master wizard to get their flaws fixed, but their imperfections end up helping them defeat the bad guys.
The writing is boring to read, and the story turned out to be not even remotely fairy-tale-like. The idea behind the story is actually interesting and there's a point to it, but the artistic side of it fell flat. Although, maybe that's the translator's fault, because the translator plays a huge role in this.
The characters insult each other, and the author uses words that are completely not suitable for kids' literature. I didn't like how the characters are portrayed, and some of them remind me of the hooligans of the 90s. I had a different picture of fairy-tale characters in my mind.
The illustrations are quick sketches, the kind you'd find in adult humor literature, like cartoons. But for kids, you need something more concrete that grabs their attention and is accessible.
Plain and simple, don't buy this for kids or read it yourself. It's boring, uninteresting, and in some places, just plain disgusting. It's not suitable for kids at all.
I'd give this book a rating of 1 out of 5 stars. The only positive aspect of this book is the idea behind the story, but it's not enough to save it from being a total waste of time and money.
Pros: None
Cons: Boring writing, not suitable for kids, uninteresting story, poor illustrations, and some parts are just plain disgusting.
