I spent a while pondering whether my child needed a course with a perfectly balanced set of learning books or if I could just grab a mix of stuff. After reading other reviews, I formed an opinion that this course is worth it, even if my child doesn't use all the books. The idea is that some topics will be more appealing and easy to grasp, while others will be more challenging, so it's better to save them for later or focus on specific books.
The School of 7 Gnomes course for 0 to 1 year is designed with a violet theme and has a vibrant, colorful packaging. Inside, you'll find a simpler box that contains 12 learning books and a diploma.
The books are quite large, A4 format, which makes them a bit cumbersome to flip through. When I first used them, I found it difficult to hold the book and my child at the same time. The pages are too big for my child's eyes, and the pictures are just too large. I even tried flipping through them on the floor, but my child would get bored and climb on top of the book.
The minus: uncooperative book size.

However, calling these books "thin" would be a stretch.
Each book has a page for parents that explains how to work with the topic, suggests games, and poses questions to help your child understand better.
Our first encounter with the course was when my child was 9 months old. After browsing through the books, I quickly identified the starting point, and here's what it looks like...
Book 1
Colorful pictures.
What's great about these books is that you can offer them to your little one in any order you like. There's no specific sequence or numbering. It's really up to the child's development and interests.
We had a lot of fun flipping through the colorful pictures, folding the pages, and testing the durability. It's hard to say what specifically caught our attention, but the pages are surprisingly sturdy and resistant to tearing.
The book quickly lost its appeal, and after a few days, our little one stopped showing any interest. She'd either ignore it or push it aside. But moms are persistent! I found an alternative way to spark her interest: I cut out the pictures and stuck them on the fridge, door, and walls. As we walked by, I'd point to the colorful images and say 'look, a tree!' or 'look, a flower!' The little one loved tapping on the pictures with her finger and smiling as she recognized the objects.
Pros: The pages are sturdy.
Cons: The images aren't very engaging when you're holding the book at arm's length. You need to be a bit farther away to see the pictures properly. Again, it's the book's format that's the issue.
Book 2.
Day and Night.
It's tough to teach a child to understand the concept of day and night using just this book. I think it's a bit too early to introduce this topic, even to a one-year-old. It's easier to explain it by pointing to the outside world: 'look, it's dark at night, and look, the sun is shining during the day.'
But how do you explain colors to a child who doesn't even know what they are? My little one didn't understand that the blue background represented night, and the big yellow sun on the page represented day.
The only image that really caught her attention was the big, colorful rooster. I have to admit, I was pretty excited about it too!
In the middle of the book, there's a fold-out page that you can cut out and glue together. It's supposed to be a mobile for the crib, but I used it as a teaching tool instead. The little one loved moving the cards from one hand to the other.
We ended up putting this book aside for now and moving on to something else. I'll just have to save my enthusiasm for another book!
Book 3.
What Does It Sound Like?
I was a bit hesitant to start using the book with my 10-month-old daughter, since the recommended age is 6 months. But she was absolutely fascinated by the sounds and pictures, and I loved watching her explore. The only thing is, she didn't really understand what some of the objects were, like the airplane or the drum.
One thing that really stood out to me was the bell - it's a familiar object for her. On the other hand, the picture of a home phone completely baffled her, since we only use our mobile phones at home.

Book 4: My Favorite Toys
This has been one of our favorite educational books so far.
The pictures are all really simple, and she loves looking at the toys that we have at home. There's a special insert in the middle that has a smaller version of the objects, and we've been using it to play a fun matching game. She loves finding the big version of each object, but it can be a bit overwhelming with all the cards at once. I think it would be great to start with just a few cards and gradually add more. Book 5: Square and Circle
Unfortunately, this book has been a bit of a challenge for us, since the shapes are a bit too complex for her to understand. The insert with the cut-out shapes just ended up being a fun toy for her to play with, but she didn't really get the concept of matching the shapes to the pictures.
I put this book on the shelf for later, but to be honest, I think my kid would have a harder time with it. Maybe it's better to get the wooden version and try to figure out the shapes that way. The idea itself is pretty cool, but it's just not my kid's thing.
Book 6.
Cat Cat.
This book is all about cat antics, and it's got plenty of things for my kid to look at and focus on. I've seen her carrying this book around, begging me to read it to her – and it's clear she loves it!
Book 7.
What's that color?
This book helps my kid focus on a specific color and learn to distinguish between main colors. For me, orange is a bit of a mystery – but the creators think it's a main color, and maybe my kid will too!
The color-matching activity involves matching small cards to the corresponding petal on a flower. It's a fun way for my kid to learn colors during playtime with blocks.
However, the cards are prone to getting worn out quickly. Still, the idea itself is really cool.
Book 8.
Who's doing what?
My kid loves looking at the pictures and hearing the sounds, but I'm not a fan of how the ball is explained – it's just too easy to get confused with the name 'Katya'! And the rocking motion on the swings is a bit of a puzzle too. Can't they just draw something else instead?" I have to say, the pictures and explanations of the animals were a nice touch.
The mask-shaped page with the bear and puppy was a fun one to assemble, and I had to do it for my mom too!
I think I'll hold off on wearing the mask until Halloween, for now.
Book 10.
A fun parade.
To be honest, it didn't really grab me. The pictures seemed a bit dull and lacking in color. I'd say it's the least exciting book in the set!
The rabbit puzzle was another one that required assembly, and I'm sure parents will be happy to put it together for their little ones.
Book 11.
Puzzle time.
The puzzle required us to cut a picture into two equal parts and then match them up to complete the image.
For now, we're just flipping through the book and admiring the fish and mushrooms. It'll be fun to play with once our little one can recognize the images and find the second part of the puzzle. We're not quite there yet, but I'm sure we'll have a blast once we are.
Book 12.
Fun sayings for little ones.
This one felt like a repeat of Book 4.
Verdict: This learning aid is pretty engaging, and I enjoyed playing with it just as much as my little one. The sequence of lessons can vary depending on the child's interest and developmental stage. To be honest, I find that many books for learning before the age of 1 can be a bit too complex for babies to understand, and some of the images aren't entirely clear. Still, they're perfect for older kids who've got a bit more grasping the concepts. I wouldn't stress too much about expecting a toddler to grasp specific topics in 7 Gnomes School from 0 to 1 year old. And if your child is a bit older – around 1.5 to 2 years – you can definitely get them started with this course.
For my kid, I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars in terms of value for money.
I'm definitely looking to buy the next course!
