I recently picked up this LCD display module 1602 with I2C interface expansion from Ozon, and I'm generally pleased with it. It's got two lines of 16 characters each, perfect for showing text and graphical info. When it arrived, it was in good condition, and, as usual, it had a blue or green display. Mine just happened to be blue:
One of the best things about this module is how easy it is to work with, especially with the I2C interface expansion board. Just make sure to check the photos and description carefully when ordering - some sellers might not include this expansion board! And, as it turns out, the board is actually soldered onto the back of the module:
This expansion board makes a huge difference, as it simplifies the connection process to your microcontroller. You only need two contacts, plus +5V and GND. Just be sure to check the back of the module for the I2C address jumper pins (A0, A1, A2). Sellers usually mention the address in the description, but sometimes it's not there. Without the I2C expansion, working with this module was a total nightmare - you'd have to rig up a parallel interface to display characters on the LCD. That's a real mess, with a ton of signals involved. Your microcontroller and display would end up looking like a big ball of wire.
I also want to mention a significant downside I encountered. Most of the time, modules come with Latin characters stored in the display's memory. But sometimes, the Chinese suppliers send modules with Chinese characters stored instead! The module does have a feature for storing custom characters, but the number is limited. So, you'd have no idea whether the module you receive will have Chinese characters or not - and that's a major problem.
Frankly, modules like this are already outdated. Everyone's moving to OLED displays, which are way smaller and more convenient. Plus, they're almost as affordable as these LCD displays.
So, if you're looking for a decent choice for learning and displaying info from your microcontroller, this LCD display module is a good pick. But if you're building a finished device or gadget, you might want to consider something else. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in robotics and electronics, though!
