Editor's Summary

I'm writing this review with a heavy heart, as it's about a distressing experience I had with my cat, Charlie, in June this year. When I was bathing my cat, I completely forgot to clean his ears, not to mention check them after the bath. It's a miracle I didn't miss anything more serious. Fast forward a few days, and I was getting ready for bed when I caught a glimpse of something disturbing in one of Charlie's ears: a small, dry clump of dried blood and black flakes. It looked like a tiny makeup ball, but the color was a dark brown. Upon closer inspection, I found some dark, unpleasant-looking specks, about 1-2 mm in size, with a dark color, and the ear was filled with a murky, transparent liquid. I was worried sick, but our clinic was already closed, and I didn't want to go to another one for a complex issue like this. So, I had to wait until the next morning. During the wait, I scoured the internet for information on what could be causing this. Let's just say it wasn't exactly reassuring reading. The only thing that kept me going was Charlie's seemingly good health. He wasn't running a fever, was eating well, and even played and interacted normally, except for occasionally shaking his head and scratching his ear. Finally, the morning arrived, and we headed to our vet. After a thorough examination, the vet diagnosed Charlie with ear inflammation. He assured me it wasn't an ear infection and prescribed a human topical cream and some ear drops. Otosolan – Suspension for external use (ear drops)! ▪ ❈ I'm writing this review with a heavy heart, as it's about a distressing experience I had with my cat, Charlie, in June this year. ❈ ▪

I was bathing my cat, and in the process, I completely forgot to clean his ears, not to mention check them after the bath.

He assured me it wasn't an ear infection and prescribed a human topical cream and some ear drops:

Otoksolan – Suspension for external use (ear drops)!

◾️❈ GENERAL INFO: ❈◾️

◾️ Where I bought it – the "ALF" pet store;

◾️ Price – 600 rubles;

◾️ Volume: 10 ml;

◾️ Country of origin Slovenia;

◾️ Expires on 07. 2021 year.

From the manufacturer:

II. Pharmacological properties

When I dived into the details of Otosolan, I was impressed by its broad-spectrum activity. This combined medication packs a punch against microbes, fungi, and inflammation. The combination of active components with different mechanisms of action makes it a powerful tool against a range of bacterial and fungal infections.

The active ingredients, marbofloxacin and clotrimazole, work in tandem to take down the bad guys. Marbofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, inhibits DNA synthesis in bacteria, tackling gram-negative and gram-positive microbes like Staphylococcus intermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Proteus mirabilis. On the other hand, clotrimazole, an imidazole, disrupts the cell membrane, causing cell destruction and inhibiting molecular synthesis. It's particularly effective against dermatophytes and yeast like Malassezia pachydermatis.

Dexamethasone acetate, the third active component, is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and promotes wound healing.

For more information, check out the website.

INSTRUCTIONS:

APPLICATION ORDER:

Otosolan is prescribed for dogs suffering from bacterial and fungal otitis, caused by microorganisms and fungi sensitive to marbofloxacin and clotrimazole.

Contraindications include individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, including in the animal's history. The use of the drug is prohibited in animals with a perforated eardrum.

Before application, the ear canal and outer ear of the dog are cleaned. The vial with the medicinal product is shaken thoroughly for 30 seconds, then carefully squeezed to fill the cannula, and Otosolan is administered to each ear by 5-10 drops (depending on the size of the animal) and gently massaged at the base of the ear. The drug is administered once a day for 7-14 days until the animal recovers.

If the animal shakes its head after application, the head should be fixed for a few minutes to prevent the drug from being sprayed.

When treating two or more animals, a separate cannula is used for each animal.

When you overdose on Otosol, dogs can experience changes in their blood chemistry and hematology (like elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase, aminotransferase, neutrophilia, eosinopenia, and lymphopenia). These symptoms occur when you administer a dose that's three times the therapeutic dose.

You shouldn't use the medication on pregnant or lactating bitches.

Inside the box, you'll find the actual medication in a small plastic vial and a rubber dropper with a lid:

It all looks pretty good!

I immediately removed the lid from the vial and threw it away, putting on the rubber dropper:

Despite the small size of the vial, it lasted us for a long time - we only used about a quarter of it.

After opening the vial, use it within 3 months!

So, we can finally get rid of the dropper.

▪ ❈ ▪

The actual medication is a thick, transparent liquid with a neutral scent, similar to vegetable oil:

Although we didn't have an ear infection, we were prescribed Otosol!

THE TREATMENT PLAN WAS AS FOLLOWS: 2 times a day, you need to apply CREAM Celostoderm®-V with garamycin (available at human pharmacies) to the cleaned ear surface, and in the evening, after applying the cream, you need to drop 1-2 drops of Otosol.

It's crucial to follow the sequence: first apply the cream (not ointment), then drop the Otosol. You can't do it the other way around! If you do, the Otosol will pass through the cream and won't work, while the cream won't be able to act through the oily Otosol.

I was dealing with a whole lot of gross stuff in my cat's ear before I started using these ear drops:

I really wanted to take a picture of the ear itself, but all my attempts failed - after the last one, when my cat almost yanked the phone out of my hands, I decided to just drop it.

Three days into the treatment, the ear looked like this:

The difference is clear! After a week, the ear was completely clean, but our vet recommended we keep using the drops for another three days.

It's now been three months since this issue started, and we haven't had any problems with the ear since.

◾️❈ FINAL VERDICT: ❈◾️

I highly recommend these ear drops, "Otoksolan"! They're top-notch and really work.
