Editor's Summary
I picked up Grass Dishwasher by accident when my usual dishwasher powder ran out. I was drawn in by the fact that this detergent is suitable not only for household use but also for professional use. Unfortunately, things like that usually turn out to be economical and effective, but not this time.
Specifications
I picked up Grass Dishwasher by accident when my usual dishwasher powder ran out. The price was pretty reasonable (around 300 rubles for a 1-liter bottle), and I wanted to try out a liquid dishwasher detergent.
Grass Dishwasher reviewI was drawn in by the fact that this detergent is suitable not only for household use but also for professional use, and things like that usually turn out to be economical and effective (spoiler: only part of my expectations were met).
Grass Dishwasher reviewGrass Dishwasher also doesn't require salt - it's universal for water of any hardness. Salt for dishwashers from this manufacturer is actually not available in their lineup, which kind of hints at the fact that salt for Grass isn't necessary. On the other hand, a rinse aid for dishwashers is sold separately, so I'm already questioning and doubting the manufacturer's promises about thorough rinsing at this stage.
Despite the fact that Grass Dishwasher is marketed as a dishwasher detergent, the manufacturer claims that it's also suitable for hand washing, but in that case, it needs to be diluted. In a machine, the concentrate is poured in as is. The detergent should be eco-friendly and non-irritating enough not to bother your hands (even when diluted), but I'm skeptical about whether non-irritation can be combined with effectiveness.
Grass Dishwasher has a unique cap - it doesn't just unscrew; you need to press it and then turn it half a turn, and the bottle opens. It seems convenient because unscrewing a fully screwed-on cap can be a hassle. But in practice, it turned out that either my hands are growing from some non-physiological place, or something's wrong with this cap: press it, don't press it, and it won't unscrew the first time; you have to try a few times, press it, try again, because until you find the 'sweet spot,' the cap will just keep spinning around its axis and won't open. That's infuriating.
Grass Dishwasher ReviewGrass Dishwasher ReviewWhen I first opened the cap, I was greeted by a foil plug that's sealed on tight - I had to use a bit of force to pry it off, and even then, it was a bit of a struggle. The opening is wide, but it's a bit tricky to pour the liquid in without spilling too much, especially when the bottle is almost empty. It's also a bit of a pain to pour it in from a height, as the liquid tends to flow out quickly through the wide opening.
The bottle itself has measurement markings, but to be honest, I'm not really sure what the point of those is. I mean, I'm always pouring in less than the marked amount, and the lines are pretty hard to read.
Grass Dishwasher ReviewGrass Dishwasher liquid is incredibly runny - I'd even go so far as to say it's more like a liquid with a bit of gel-like properties. It's definitely not a gel, but it's not a liquid either. Either way, it's super easy to pour, and it doesn't leave any residue behind.
The liquid is completely transparent and has a very subtle, almost non-existent scent. I love that it's free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances - it's a big plus for anyone with allergies or who's just looking for a more eco-friendly option.
Grass Dishwasher ReviewNow, let's get to the good stuff - the real-world tests!
First up, we've got a pot that's been used to make a fish soup. As you can see, the bottom is a bit stained, but that's not from the soup itself - it's from something that was burnt on there earlier. We managed to scrub it clean, but the stain still lingered. No worries, though - Grass Dishwasher took care of it like a pro. The real test, though, is the sides of the pot. That's where the real grime was hiding, and let me tell you, it was a doozy. But Grass Dishwasher came through and left the pot sparkling like new.
The quality of cleaning is insane - I mean, it's not just surface-level grime that's getting removed, but also that pesky protein-based 'scale' buildup on the walls. I've never seen a cleaner tackle that before. The only catch is, the dishwasher itself had a weird fishy smell afterwards... Yeah, I guess that's just a result of the Grass formula lacking ventilation, especially when washing dishes after strong-smelling foods. But, to be fair, that's mostly just fish and seafood, right?
Grass Dishwasher review Grass Dishwasher reviewAnd then there's the amazing universal lid (about which I wrote a review here).
Grass Dishwasher reviewThe Grass Dishwasher cleans off all the grease, but leaves behind streaks and water spots on the glass lid. I guess that's just the scale or whatever that the separate rinse aid is supposed to get rid of. Honestly, I'm not too bothered by those spots, since for me, they're not dirt. I've never used rinse aids in my dishwasher, since I think the residue they leave behind is way worse than those calcium spots.
I've also got some issues with the silicone. Yeah, it gets rid of the grease, but leaves behind these weird, transparent streaks that feel neutral to the touch, but only come off if you scrape them with your nail. It's not the end of the world, but it's kinda annoying.
Grass Dishwasher reviewSo, in the end:
- it does a great job on smooth surfaces;
- it gets rid of grease everywhere;
- it hates silicone, and leaves behind streaks on glass.
But the biggest downside of Grass Dishwasher is its absolute lack of economy. One liter bottle (which I tried to use sparingly, since the cleaning effect didn't improve with more liquid) lasted me two whole months. Two months, folks!
This is despite the fact that 1 kg of any powder lasts me for 7-8 months, or even longer.
Let's be real, the initial cost savings of using Grass end up being a total wash when you factor in all the extra expenses. I mean, I was expecting some serious cleaning power, but honestly, it's just not that impressive. For me, it's hard to justify the cost, even if it is eco-friendly.
I'm all about eco-friendliness, but the packaging on this product is straight-up plastic waste. Give me a powder in a cardboard packet any day!
