I recently took advantage of the New Year's sales and signed up for a yearly membership at a local gym. I was eyeing Athletic Gym in Tumen, which had multiple locations and a pretty attractive price point. It seemed like a great deal, so I went for it.
The best part about this gym is that you can visit any of their six locations using their club car. Each location has its own unique theme, which is pretty cool. But let's talk about the Tumen location, which is located in the city center.
First off, the location is easy to find - it's on the third floor of a shopping mall. But once you get inside, things get a bit confusing. The interior is designed to look like a garage, with dark gray tones and dim lighting. It's not exactly the most motivating atmosphere.
I had a hard time figuring out where to go and who to talk to. I ended up asking a staff member at the coat check for help, and they directed me to the manager. The manager, a woman with a rather...interesting...appearance, seemed put off by my presence. I got the feeling that I was interrupting something.
To get a tour of the gym, I had to show my passport, take a photo, and leave a fingerprint. And to make matters worse, they didn't even give me a document to sign for data processing. The manager told me that they would set up a guest card for me if I decided to buy a membership, and that all my biometric data would be transferred to it. That's just a bit too much for me.
The gym itself is pretty standard - there's a weight room, a group fitness area, a sauna, and shower stalls. There's also a fitness bar with water and healthy snacks. The area is pretty comfortable, and there's even a kids' zone (although I didn't see any staff members supervising the kids).
The locker rooms are spacious, with convenient lockers and a decent amount of space to change. The group fitness area is pretty big, with all the necessary equipment. However, the manager warned me that I'd have to bring my own yoga mat, which is a bit inconvenient. Most gyms include mats in the membership fee.
The weight room is well-equipped, with a variety of machines and zones for different types of exercise. There's a cardio zone, a cross-fit area, and a strength training area. I never had to wait in line for a machine.
The sauna is pretty standard, with separate areas for men and women. Towels are provided free of charge. However, the shower stalls are a different story. They're basically just brick-walled sections with a drain in the floor, like you'd find in a pool. There are very few shower stalls for a gym of this size, and they're not exactly the cleanest. Maybe it's part of the 'garage' theme?
The gym is open from 7am to 11pm on weekdays and 8am to 10pm on weekends. I'm a yoga enthusiast, and I'm happy to report that they have early morning classes starting at 7:30. Not every gym can say that.
However, you do need to book your group fitness classes in advance. They have a mobile app with a schedule and some basic features for clients. I booked my classes using the app, and it was pretty easy.
The yearly membership for all locations cost me 9,999 rubles, which is a steal compared to the usual 25,000 rubles. They also offer a payment plan through the Halva card without any interest.
I was really put off by this gym. The manager's attitude, the lack of transparency, and the poor shower facilities all added up to a negative experience. I wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone. There are better options out there, and I'd rather not give them my biometric data.
